As of 11:30pm EST, I see approx. 150 GPU Results ready to send. I imagine that will go quick given there are 4000 in process.

It may just be a reporting error?

State . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . acemd, acemd2, acemdbeta
GPU Results ready to send; 0 , . . . . 0 , . . . . 17

I continued to pick up tasks overnight, and received one task less than 30min ago.

It's zero at the moment...
But I've received a task 15 minutes ago.
Since I edited this post, it's changed to 1 :) and then back to 0.
I guess, we pick up tasks faster than they generated, until every host fills up it's queue to 2 tasks/GPU.

We recently discontinued some batches of WUs plus workflows coming to its end.
We are preparing some new jobs to be submitted between today and tomorrow.

The sooner the better :)
One of my GPU is going to run dry in 30 minutes.
Many other fast GPU will do the same soon.
BTW for faster GPUs the wu cache size could be larger than 2...

Here also are one user who like bigger cache. Maybe 5 - 6 wu's is good.

My fastest machine ran dry a few hours ago. It's going to another project for a while. A bigger queue for faster GPUs would help.

I'm getting:

Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks

Looks like GPU GRID is out of work. Server status is showing zero units available, 17 beta units.

Id like to see at least a 24-hour cache just in case something goes wrong with the server. Currently if GPUGRID goes down for something, I'm dry in 5-6 hours with this ridiculous max queue of 4 WUs. This is the most restricted DC project out there when it comes to the size of the buffer.

Bad timing for me... All my Linux + Nvidia machines run either GPUGrid or GPUGrid + DNETC. Guess what's down for maint? Yup, DNETC. But so far only 1 GT8800 high and dry. How it ran dry and the GTX/GTS cards are still working I don't know but I'm sure it's just a coincidence of timing but I do need to see why it didn't have more DNETC que'd up.DNETC is supposed to be back up at 10pm (CDT) tonight so there's some relief soon there if the Linux boys wanna play with an "Alpha" project.

As ignasi said, new jobs are to be submitted between today and tomorrow. So expect some more intermittent periods/outages for a few hours.

I have hooked a GTX260 up to MW overnight, as it ran dry. It has a low cache and GPUGrid is still selected, but I will check in tomorrow morning.
Fortunately my Fermi has a running task and one in the queue, good for a few hours yet. My other lesser cards (mostly GT240’s) might run dry overnight, but I will leave it until the morning before I hook them up elsewhere, if required.
If my Fermi is dry in the morning I will hook it up to Folding and keep checking the GPUGrid Server Status and the site for news.

Looks like there is still a shortage, but it was not a complete outage.
A couple of my cards are still waiting but I picked 3 tasks up overnight and 2 this morning:

2885215 1841306 27 Aug 2010 8:33:33 UTC 1 Sep 2010 8:33:33 UTC In progress --- --- --- --- ACEMD2: GPU molecular dynamics v6.05 (cuda)

One was an IBUCH_freebind_pYEEI and the other was a TONI_CAPBIND.

Hi
Normally keep a 0.00 cache but by increasing to 0.20 the computer keeps pounding away at the server and has managed to find another WU and so far,the luck is in and has been kept fully employed :).
Picked up This.
Is this one of the new breed of tasks? if so bring them on,took 10.75 hours on a gtx 275 with a 38 mb upload!
Would not like to get one of these on my little 240 though :)
Chris.

I have a full complement of tasks in progress again.
I watched the number of tasks waiting to be sent fall from 287 to 280 in about 5min.

aet35-IBUCH_GCY_100625-39-40-RND7046 looks promising; your GTX275 would get about 45K per day on Win7 crunching those work units 24/7. Looked at a couple of other tasks you recently ran, and they were giving you about 35K per day. But it is only one task type.

I got on my GT240 one of the new tasks with the name 29-IBUCH_revhi_TRYP_100827-0-10-RND3357 .
The estimated given runtime was ~16 hours, but is increasing now.
Extrapolated with the runtime so far, it will run 33½ hours.
That would mean I will not longer be able to go for 50% bonus :(

Please extend the 50% bonus period to 2 days, so also slower cards (however GT240 is not really slow) are able to return fast enough.

Regards,

CP

These are a special case. We needed to make them longer to speed up the calculations. We are waiting for these results to finish a paper.

We were not expecting to run dry. For coincidence a couple of large batches finished at the same time.

You will still get the 25% bonus, and as these are about 30% faster you should get slightly more points than you would crunching normal work units for the same time period:
125% X 1.3 > 150%

I'm sure they are working on it. Two unforeseen big project batches finishing at once was the source of the shortage. My cache is full at the minute, but hopefully some more tasks will trickle into the feeders overnight to keep the faster cards ticking over.

Just spotted another _TRYP_ task, 352-IBUCH_revlo_TRYP_100827-0-10-RND6903, this time on one of my GT240’s (one of 4 on a Vista system). It should finish 19min under 24h, going by Boinc. So looking forward to some brownie points there to pull my RAC back over 200K/day, or at least stop the slide. It’s shaders are overclocked and supported by a Phenom II 940 with one core free – but even at that your 33h seems a bit long to me; about 4h too long.

I think, you're refering to my mentioned 33½ hours.
My job is now at 24%. Calculated for 100% this means 33.1 hours.
I freed 1 core for about 3 hours, but that makes not so much difference.
I've clocked my GT240 with DDR5 at Core=683, Memory=1876 and Shader=1664.
Perhaps my CPU is not that fast: 2.08GHz / FSB800.

I understand that. The only thing I worry is what I should do, either switch to collatz or dnetc either try to be patient and wait for GPUGRID.

Two things make me pissed off: Milky Way is down AGAIN on weekend (he-he, not surprise at all) and I'm trying to quit smoking :-)

If there was only collatz and dnetc to chose from I would stop crunching. I dont know when more tasks will be ready, so I cant offer much more advice other than to look and see if you have tasks and make your own decision based on that. Perhaps raising your cache will help a bit, should tasks appear. If I had to guess I would say tonight will be similar to last night; some tasks will be released, but that is only based on last night - I picked up tasks at about 3am, 5am and 8.30am this morning. If you do decide to crunch elsewhere, you could set your Resource share for the other projects to a very low number (1% or so). Might be an idea to close and re-open Boinc if you do that.

CP, my GT240 _TRYP_ task is now looking more like 26h, so no 50% bonus for me either. The anticipated run time was initially well out. The _TRYP_ task I have running on a GTX260 also moved out from 9h to 14.5h. That one is about 7.5h into the run now, so it is probably more accurate.

Got one "Fatty" WU.......now dry again. I don't understand how molecular biology simulations could EVER run out of work. It makes absolutely NO SENSE WHATSOEVER. There is enough calculation that needs to be done in this area to keep computers busy for at least the next 10,000 years (by today's computing technology capabilities).

Even with infinite manpower, unlimited financial resources and perfect management we would still not be able to crunch now and again; your Internet would be out, your computer would crash or your GPU would fail tasks.

Boinc is now saying my GT240's _TRYP_ task will take 31+h - only 13h to go.
I picked up two tasks around 5.50 UTC, one at 7.50 and one about 9.02; a _TRYP_ task on my Fermi :)

You're right about that. This kind of simulation practically needs infinite time to finish. But as far as I know this project, its tasks depend on a previous task, as every task we crunch covers 5ns (a fatty task covers 10ns) of the given chemical reaction. In that way this project can run out of work, but of course only temporarily.

Maybe they could setup different bins for nS times to be crunched. The default would be 5nS but they could have bins for 10, 15, 20, 25......all the way up to what is necessary for the entire simulation to meet whatever requirements they have for it. For the higher bins though they need an auto-reload for failed WUs (they actually should have that now!) so that if a computation error occurs, it just restarts from the last checkpoint that was saved to disk (BOINC default is 60 seconds). This way the most time anyone would lose on any given computation error is 59.999999 seconds of computing time instead of losing the entire WU, which is what happens currently.

I only have dual boot on the PC that runs Windows, the rest run on Mint Linux 8 gnome or KDE. I've tried other distros, but they either failed too many WU's or were not my cup of tea for other reasons.

I've used this down time to test YDL for Cuda, but still haven't gotten it too work. I "think" it's the security setting. BOINC can't connect to the Internet. I "might" try Fedora 13 LXDE 64bit. If I do & don't like, I'll go back to Mint Linux 8 AGAIN...

You and me both. Out of curiosity, how are you getting 5,500 more RAC than me? I've got both my GTX480s already overclocked to 800 MHz and 2 GHz for the memory. That's as high as they go without getting failed work units every other one.......at least on air anyways. Are you running yours even higher than that on liquid cooling or thermoelectric???

Michael, you are using Vista; about 10 to 15% slower than XP. The only reason your dual GPU system is anywhere near Retvari's is that you have overclocked (Retvari's is running at stock).

Just in case you are not, you should be leaving two CPU cores free and using swan_sync=0.

Your RAC can change a lot depending on the tasks you pick up. Take these two tasks,

3013500 1912540 22 Sep 2010 23:36:21 UTC 23 Sep 2010 5:01:37 UTC Completed and validated 10,362.56 10,097.55 5,764.79 8,647.18 ACEMD2: GPU molecular dynamics v6.11 (cuda31)

3013410 1910355 22 Sep 2010 23:21:26 UTC 23 Sep 2010 4:03:22 UTC Completed and validated 7,910.53 7,755.48 4,535.61 6,803.41 ACEMD2: GPU molecular dynamics v6.11 (cuda31)

If you just ran the first type your RAC could eventually reach (86400/10362)X8647=72100 per card.

If you just ran the second type your RAC could reach (86400/7910)X6803=74308 per card.

Of course your RAC takes a long time to even out, and tasks can change. My guess is that your RAC is still rising, but towards the RAC apex this would be hard to see on a day to day basis.

I have two GTX470's in an i7-920 at 715MHz, similar to your system. They are getting through work about the same rate as your system, but my RAC is only about 80K on that system. The second card was only installed recently, so it will take some time for that systems RAC to reach 140K, and it might never happen if we keep running out of work.

Skgiven is already answered your question.
From my experience I can add to his answer: It is more rewarding (being more reliable) to overclock your CPU, than your GTX480. If you overclock the GPU only, you will experience falling GPU usage, and a little performance gain (and failing WUs). The best is to overclock both the CPU and the GPU(s), but it needs very decent GPU cooling wich is much harder (and more expensive) to install than a decent CPU cooler.
My system runs with air cooling, my C2Q9650 CPU is overclocked to 4GHz (444MHz) it's cooled by a Noctua NH-D14 and a Noctua NF-P12 placed next to the NH-D14 on the side of my PC case (it has other two NF-P12s over the two GPUs). The CPU cores running at 44-53°C (with 100% CPU usage, 23°C ambient temperature). The two GPU cooler is standard, but I've modded it on my other system which has only 1 GPU. I removed the sideplate from the standard cooler, and replaced it with a Coolink SWiF2-120P 12cm fan and I've disconnected the standard cooling fan. This GPU runs at 74°C at 95% GPU usage without disturbing noise (I have two Noctua NF-P12 on the side of this PC case too). I will do the same with the other two GPUs, when I'll have some slim 12cm coolers (eg. Scythe SY1212SL12H) but it's hard to find them here.
But all of the above is almost pointless, if one uses Windows 7 or Vista for crunching, because the WDDM overhead causing significant CUDA performace loss. This loss can be eliminated by means of software changes, which is much easier to do than any hardware tweaking.
BTW my PC haven't reach it's peak RAC. I'm expecting it'll be around 145-150k.
But there's some trouble always needs to happen: e.g. this morning I've got an internet outage for 3 hours and one of my GPUs ran out of work; one of my WUs failed yesterday; now the server seems to running out of work soon....

Thanks for the feedback. I have my CPU OCed to 3.33GHz with no load other than the usual background OS stuff. I also have had the Swan_Sync going for almost a month now. Haven't had many issues with failed WUs since I backed the GPUs down from 825 to 800 though. I guess it's Vista in combination with a slower CPU. I know when I overclocked my CPU my RAC jumped about 10% immediately after it had been leveled out and has been slowly climbing ever since but I'm as far as I can go on that since the bios doesn't go any further than 25% OC on the Rampage III.

There are now 1,105 tasks waiting to be sent out ;)

I think your system is setup as well as it could be (unless you use Linux or Win XP).

One thing I noticed is that not all higher clock speeds on the GPU deliver better performance. Occasionally it can drop, so for example 780MHz might be worse than 767MHz for real performance. Repeat data sends that do not cause failure errors . I am not saying this is the case with you, but it is one to watch out for. A card that is clocked slightly below the point where it starts failing some tasks would be the most likely candidate to observe this. It is probably better to go by actual task return time than GPU clock frequency (using the same task types), or at least check that performance has increased with frequency.

There is only 139 workunits in the long wu's queue at the moment. It was 151 today morning, and 131 an hour ago.
I think we will run out of long workunits next week, unless someone put a new batch in it.
I'm getting NATHAN_RPS1120528's and NATHAN_RPS1120801_N's mostly, and rarely a NOELIA_smduplicate or NOELIA_sh2fragment_fixed.

Hopefully someone is keeping an eye on this and will add some tasks early next week :)

I expect the 4.2app and the new cards increased task turnover.
Credit seems to be dipping again, probably due to so many Beta's and normal length tasks. I would prefer tasks to be released into both Long and Normal queues, where possible. Perhaps in Sept, or just after, we will see some project changes (following the arrival of mid range cards)?

There are 1500+ in progress, so even if the unsent falls to 0, we probably wouldn't have to wait long before another auto-generated task became available.

If anyone is concerned about running out of work (and only runs tasks from the Long queue) then I suggest selecting the following Project Preference,

If no work for selected applications is available, accept work from other applications? yes

Hi dear long-queue volunteers,

Just sent 300 WU of a system I need more material to work with. It will be 67500 credits each, and it is called sh2. Also, as soon as the jobs in beta queue are done, I'll send a good bunch of jobs in the long and short queue, you'll see a post in News in two days or so.

Thank you for your time!
Noelia.

The number of unsent long workunits is dropped by 706 in the past 11 hours, so my previous estimation was exaggerated.
My new estimation is that we'll run out of long workunits in 86 hours (3.6 days) from now.

I might be wrong but I think the 20K tasks ran, returned and were used to autogenerate a second batch, based on the results of the first batch, which would mean 20K+20K went into the queue.
Remember, the methods of this experiment are different, and developing scientific methodologies is key to progressing science. Usually a few thousand tasks are released from which many generations follow. This time there are many tasks (20K) but only a couple of generations.
We are at 3,479/2,230 now, about 2000tasks in 34h. So we should be good until Monday night/Tuesday morning. We can also tap into the short queue if need be!

I just got a couple TONI units after about a month of nothing but these NOELIA units, so we must running low on NOELIA units and coming to the end of this phase of the experiment.

I received such TONI too, so we won't run out that soon as I predicted, because these TONIs are more than 2 step "deep".

The project status page shows the following numbers at the moment:

Long runs
Unsent: 1
In Progress: 1.795

There will be a shortage soon.

We'll send a new big project to the long queue very soon.

Both the cuda42 queues - long and short - seem to be low at the moment.

I don't think that the counts that show on the stats page are accurate. It showed no long tasks available about 6 hours ago, and I'm still burning through them.

I wasn't just going by the status page. I've been getting a number of, for example,

GPUGRID 25/04/2013 09:07:32 No tasks are available for Short runs (2-3 hours on fastest card)

You probadly become the resends or the new generated from another finished result. This does not change the fact about the empty queue ^^

Due to the unusually cold weather here in Hungary, I've put my last GTX 480 back to one of my "hibernated" hosts, and turned this host back on. It didn't received any long workunits, so I thought something's wrong with my host, but to my suprise, there is no work available in any queue. After 20 minutes of unsuccessful attepts to get work in the early morning, I've put my host back to "summer hibernate"....

There are only 394 unsent workunits on the long queue, while there are 1926 in progress.
I think this 394 workunits consist mostly of SDOERR_BARNA5's, and we're at ~35% of that batch, so it won't run out very soon, but I think we'll need new batches in a week.
Is there new work in preparation for the long queue?
